Spring Ice Skating Show

On
Saturday, May 7 the Moylan Iceplex filled with animals! Monkeys,
tigers, elephants, horses, bears, puppies, and lions laced up their
skates for the Zoophoria Ice Show.
Hosted by the Moylan Premier Skating Club, Zoophoria featured skaters
ranging from tots, skating to “How Much is that Doggy in the Window,”
to adult synchronized skaters performing “George of the Jungle.” Solo
performances by skaters ranging in level from pre-preliminary to
senior levels showcased skaters’ technical and artistic talents,
keeping audiences smiling and cheering throughout the show. Soloists
included Christopher Nguyen, Sara Hrabik, Addison Dunbar, Sasha
Serbrennikov, Harper Lundgren, Lauren Moor, Kayla Guy, Lucy Peterson,
Sajya Singh, Morgan Desigio, Christina Mantsorov, Irene Pullum, and
Dasha Kabanova. Group numbers were skated to songs such as “Going to
the Zoo,” “Fireflies,” and “Down in Rio,” among others. Opening and
closing numbers featured all Club members. Choreographers included
James W. Baker, Jason Dilworth, Dasha Kabanova, Alexei Mantsorov,
Irene Pullum, Meghan Roth, Liyen Vong, and Jerry Wheeler.
Skater, Sajya Singh, said the best thing about participating in the
show from her point of view was the opportunity to spend time on the
ice with friends, but also and maybe especially to form new
friendships with Club skaters she didn’t know well before they skated
together in the show. Skaters and coaches agree that ice shows like
Zoophoria give skaters a chance to work together toward a common goal,
learning teamwork and shared responsibility.
In
addition to the on-ice fun, young audience members and skaters alike
were intrigued by the educational activities offered by staff members
of the Henry Doorly Zoo Education Department. Exhibits were hands-on
and gave children (and their parents) the chance to hold and look
closely at the shell of a giant sea turtle, for example, or to explore
how blubber works to insulate the bodies of animals like sea lions and
whales.
The
Zoophoria Ice Show served as a fundraiser for the Club. Proceeds will
be used to meet the Club’s ongoing expenses. Special thanks are due to
our coaches, choreographers, skaters, and especially to our parent
volunteers for their work in making this year’s program a tremendous
success.
